Tips/Thoughts on Making a Spiritual Communion?

Spiritual communion was not taught to my generation and I only learned of its existence after finding some good prayer books in high school.  But I never did figure out this concept and have forgotten about it until this morning when I really wanted to make one.  Sometimes it would be nice to do make a spiritual communion if I can't go to Mass and receive Jesus in the true communion, or I just really need Him (which I'm experiencing  more and more these days!).

So, please bestow your thoughts on making spiritual communions- how to do it, what the blessings are- why it's different from other prayers.

God Bless You!

There is a holy communion chaplet... Not sure if the sort of thing you're looking for but I thought it might help:

The Holy Communion Chaplet

Begin with an Act of Contrition. Between the crucifix and the medal you say an Act of Faith, an Act of Hope, and an Act of Charity.

An Act of Faith

O My God, I firmly believe that Thou art one God in three Divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; I believe that Thy Divine Son became man, and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches because Thou hast revealed them, Who canst neither deceive nor be deceived.

An Act of Hope

O My God, relying on Thy almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sings, the help of Thy grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer.

An Act of Charity

O My God, I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

On the centerpiece pray on Glory Be and state Your Petition.

These are followed by 19 prayers, said in this pattern:

Hail Mary, Our Father, Memorare, Glory Be.

Repeat this pattern an additional 4 times, ending the fourth repetition with the Memorare.

On the centerpiece again pray one Glory Be and then repeat Your Petition.

I used to pray it every day, I especially love that one where you send your Angel to Mass.

But I admit, I rarely pray one, it's putting your heart there with Jesus though and wishing so badly to be there with Him.

A good priest I know recently encouraged me to say it every morning with my morning offering. We also purchased a little holy card with the prayer on it and our children too small to receive the Holy Eucharist pray it at Communion time on Sundays while we say our thanksgivings.

Hi Sarah, I'm so glad I came by today because I know very little of making a spiritual communion. Now I can start with Cam's help! God Bless!

Cam, that is so perfect! I was making some Communion beads today and thinking of how a Spiritual Communion Chaplet would be perfect, and here you have it. Wow, God is Good!!

Checking around the internet, the prayer that follows is the most common for Spiritual Communion. Maybe it could be paired with the Chaplet Cam suggested but there are great sites about this subject. Thanks for spiking my interest. I have seen this on a holy card which now will be put in my purse.

An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Sarah,
Great question. St. Josemaria Escriva wrote a short prayer for spiritual communion, which we pray once a month, when we have adoration together. Of the practice, he wrote: "What a source of grace there is in spiritual Communion! Practise it frequently and you'll have more presence of God and closer union with him in your life."
Here is the prayer:
"I wish, my Lord, to receive you with the purity, humility and devotion with which your most holy Mother received you, with the spirit and the fervor of the saints."
The beauty of The Work is that all of our prayers are short, sweet and spot on.

Hello!
I found your blog today.

You wrote: "receive Jesus in the true communion".

I would like to comment on what you wrote. I write this only to be helpful!

[To differentiate, ] The historical Rabbi called Y’hoshua was the Jewish Messiah. He grew up in Galilee and lived in the first century. His name was later changed by Christians to “Jesus”. Did you know that many words that are attributed to him was not said by him - including much of the content in the “gospels”, but was redacted by Hellenists: http://www.netzarim.co.il/Shared/Glossary/Glos_N-Q.htm#Df-NT ? I write you this since you rely on NT, which was never endorsed by the followers of Rabbi Y’hoshua. On the contrary they didn’t accept it, since it contradicts Torah [the books of Moses]. [Documentation on the above link.]

According to the Messianic prophecies of the Hebrew Bible (which Christians call the “Old Testament”), the Jewish Messiah would be a human, i.e. not “Saviour/ "divine christ" /divine. I was a devoted Christian before and when I realized this, it completely changed my life. I realized that what I had been observing was a religion that contradicts the Torah, which is endorsed by the Creator.

Following the human Jewish Messiah called Y’hoshua leads oneself into non-selectively observance of the commandments of Moses to ones utmost, including an immensely meaningful relationship with the Creator.

Kind regards,
